Information
We all enjoy creating works of
art from our photographs by applying filter effects,
but there are almost too many third party filter
manufactures and many amateurs creating them too.
Many are not so good and what they do to our images
could hardly be called art, but there are some exceptions.
A filter system that we use ourselves is the Alien
Skin range and the set that interests us here is
their Snap
Art set. From this filter set we demonstrate
how to apply a oil painted look to your images and
the effect is very good. What we particularly like
about Alien Skin filters is that we have a number
of preset effects we can choose from and from there,
many more ways to adjust the effects, so we create
something a little more unique.

For these types of effects we need
to choose a bold image and this one above meets
those requirements both in the content and the colours.
What is also good with the Alien Skin filters is
that when you find a filter combination that you
particularly like you can save the settings and
apply them to other images again and again. No point
in reinventing the wheel is there and we like this
option within the Snap Art Range. We have created
our final image here quite large, but of course
you cannot see it quite the same here as you will
in the high resolution finished image. We have included
this image with the download along with our starting
image too. Remember these are not copyright free
images and are supplied to enable you to follow
the tutorial with our images if you wish.
As an alternative we have a dedicated video tutoral
disk that covers filter effects HERE
Although we used Photoshop CS-3 to record the
videos on this disk, the tutorials are valid for
Photoshop CS-4 too.
